KD: I write erotic romance, and though I like to ratchet up the heat, my emphasis is always on the romance because I’m a firm believer the best sex comes as much from the heart as it does from all those other good bits. :)
NG: Describe your writing process...careful plotter, laid back pantster or combination of both?
KD: I’d have to say I’m more of a careless plotter. I toy with the idea for a while, usually scheming in my head on several long walks, and playing mental voyeur to my characters. Then I write a very vague synopsis and an even vaguer chapter by chapter break down. It’s quick and dirty, mostly, so I can get on with the actual writing, and it’s always subject to change as the characters goad me.
NG: What do you 'see' more clearly the setting or characters in your stories?
KD: Definitely the characters. Although having said that, it was the setting for The Initiation of Ms Holly that started the whole adventure. I was actually stuck in a train in the dark in the Eurostar tunnel. That got me thinking about sex in the dark and not being able to see the face of your lover. Then that got me wondering what would happen if even after the encounter on the train, you still weren’t allowed to see your lover’s face – like Psyche and Eros. Then the characters, Rita and Edward hijacked that scenario, invited all their kinky friends, and just ran wild and crazy all over my plot.
NG: What do you enjoy the most about being a writer?
KD:I love the fact that I’m never bored. Though I love to read and can occupy myself endlessly with a good book, if I don’t have anything I like at the moment, I can write something. I love the idea of endless worlds and amazing people existing in my head just waiting for me to invite them onto the page. Actually, most of the time, they don’t wait. They just crowd right in and make themselves at home. Okay, now I’m starting to sound like a bit of a nutter, aren’t I?
NG: lol Not to me, I get it! What are you reading right now?
KD: I’m reading Charlotte Stein’s hot space novella, The Horizon. Lots of fun, and very nasty.
NG: Mmm...my kinda book! ;-) What are you working on for the 2011?
KD: At the moment, I’m finishing up the final edits on my next novel, The Pet Shop, which will be out in print in October and in ebook formats before that. It’s published by Xcite Books. Once that’s out the door, I’ll be working on my novel, Lakeland Heatwave: Body Temperature and Rising, also for Xcite. I’m really excited, and a little nervous about this baby, because it’s my first paranormal erotic romance, and as much fun as I’m having with it, I doubt it’ll be my last.
NG: Let's talk about your latest sizzler, The Initiation of Ms Holly. In five sentences or less, share what this sexy tale is all about?
KD: Sex with a mysterious stranger in the pitch black of a malfunctioning train leads Rita Holly to undergo initiation into The Mount, a secret society filled with erotic rituals and endless intrigue, where she finds herself at the centre of a power struggle that threatens to destroy her. Think Psyche and Eros in modern day London complete with phone sex, leather cat suits and f**k me shoes.
NG: Delicious! What inspired you to pen this sexy tale?
KD: As I mentioned earlier, the inspiration for The Initiation of Ms Holly came from my own experience of being stranded in the Eurostar tunnel. And because I’ve always loved Greek mythology, it wasn’t a huge stretch from sex in a dark train to Psyche being forbidden to see her lover’s face. Once those two ideas clicked, it was a matter of putting it all into a modern context in a way that would be kinky, romantic, and have just the right blend of mystery and intrigue with a hint of magic.
NG: How long did it take you to finish this book?
KD: From the time I conceived the idea until it actually came out was about a year and a half. The book itself took much less time than that to write, but I had sent the proposal to Black Lace just before they closed their doors. Then it was several more months before I sent it to Xcite, with a couple of rejections in between. The actual writing was fast and furious because it was just so much fun. Then I forced myself to put it aside for six weeks like a good little writer, and let it incubate. Once that was done, the rewrite was a speeding bullet. The Pet Shop, which I’m writing now, is coming together much faster because of fewer obstacles.
NG: Were there any creative challenges faced and conquered before you wrote, 'The End'?
KD: The biggest creative challenge was that, since I was retelling a Greek myth, I wanted the story to be larger than life, in a lot of respects almost fantastical, and yet still be believable. I wanted to work as close to Over The Top as I could get without falling off the edge, because the story of Psyche and Eros is such an OTT sort of story, like all myths tend to be. I wanted to keep as many of those elements as I could and still make the characters seem real. Plus, I wanted the whole thing to be fun.
NG: Greek mythology rocks! The Initiation of Ms Holly has BDSM elements. What would you say to the curious reader uncertain about exploring this genre?
KD: Actually, The Initiation of Ms Holly is, in a lot of ways, my own explorations of BDSM, and the vehicle of an initiation into a secret sex society seemed to be the perfect way to do that. That being the case, perhaps Holly is the perfect book for someone who has never explored BDSM before. They can explore it with the author, and with Rita.
For me, the easiest way to explore this genre was is to approach it as a voyeur. I approached the harder BDSM scenes in Holly that way because it was the only way I could write them comfortably. Also it allowed me to observe from a safe place, and to try to understand motivations for my characters’ actions, motivations that aren’t in my every-day sexual context. What I found, by using this approach, is that I was much more open to the intimacy of the experience and to the complex psychology that underlies BDSM. In the end, the writing of, and the reading of BDSM scenes became no less uncomfortable (that’s what they’re supposed to be) but a lot less intimidating.
NG: Describe the heroine and hero in three words.
KD: Rita is tough, unassuming, independent
Edward is conflicted, romantic, secretive
NG: Give me three reasons readers will love The Initiation of Ms Holly.

NG: It was my pleasure, K D, I wish you the best with this release and all future endeavors!
Journalist, RITA HOLLY, never dreamed sex with the Mysterious EDWARD in the dark of a malfunctioning train would lead to a blindfolded, champagne-drenched tango, a spanking by a butch waitress, and an offer of initiation into the exclusive mysteries of THE MOUNT. Desperate to save her threatened job, she agrees, scheming secretly to write an inside exposé on the club, which will make her career. But as she delves deeper into the intrigue of The Mount and the lives of its members, she soon discovers that her heart may have other plans.
Caution! Scintillating Excerpt Below:
HE PRACTICALLY FELL ON top of Rita, his hand grazing her left breast in the complete darkness. She yelped and grabbed him to keep from losing her balance.
‘God, I’m sorry!’ He gasped. ‘Bloody nuisance, this, isn’t it?’ His voice was warm, melodious, by far the most pleasant thing that had happened to Rita since she left Paris. ‘Oh dear. You’re trembling. Are you all right?’
‘I’m claustrophobic.’ Her words were thin and shaky, as though she didn’t fully trust herself to let them out. ‘It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t know where we are.’ For an embarrassing moment, she realised she was still clinging to him, but the embarrassment passed, and suddenly she didn’t care. If they were going to die trapped in a train in the Eurostar tunnel, buried beneath a gazillion gallons of water, she’d just as soon not do it alone.
He either understood, or was too polite to leave her in such distress. He wrapped his arms around her engulfing her in a muscular embrace, the scent of which was maleness barely masked by deodorant and some spicy cologne, both fading at the end of a day much longer than either of them had anticipated. ‘Don’t worry.’ In the darkness, he misjudged the distance between them and his lips brushed her earlobe. ‘It’s just an electrical malfunction. Anyway we’re better off down here than in the snowstorm up above. Sounds like all London is shut down. Who’d have expected snow this late in the spring? Never mind that, where else do you get the chance to cuddle strangers in the dark?’
He pressed a little closer to her, and she was relieved to find other thoughts, thoughts more welcome than those of their predicament, pushing their way into her head. He felt good, broad-shouldered and tall, easy to lean on.
‘Why are you huddled here in the corner rather than hunkered down in your seat?’
She concentrated on his warm breath pressing against the top of her ear. ‘I was on my way back from the loo when the lights went out and …’
‘And this is as far as you got.’
She nodded against his chest, honing in on the reassuring sound of his heartbeat.
‘Shall I help you back to your seat then?’
The train lurched forward, and she yelped again, tightening her grip around his neck. ‘No, please. It’s better if I just don’t move.’
There was a long pause. ‘Do you want me to stay with you?’
She realised the poor man had little choice clenched in her strangle hold, as he was. ‘I don’t want to be any trouble,’ she lied.
He readjusted his stance and tightened his embrace. ‘No trouble at all. I can’t think of a better way to pass the time than in the arms of a beautiful woman. You are beautiful, aren’t you?’
In spite of the stress she felt, she forced a laugh. ‘Gorgeous, actually. Too bad you can’t see for yourself.’
He ran a hand down the contour of her spine to rest low on the small of her back. ‘I don’t have to see you to admire you.’
The thought that the man was rather cheeky barely crossed her mind before he lifted her fingers to his lips and planted a warm kiss across the back of her knuckles. ‘I’m Edward. I’m from London. Clearly you’re not.’
